CBD 101: What exactly is it and how it can be used.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound found in the cannabis plant, more specifically, in the cannabis species known as hemp. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound; it doesn't make you feel "high" or stoned, but it has been shown to have tremendous medical benefits. CBD has been used to treat everything from chronic pain to anxiety to arthritis. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties. It is also known to reduce stress while improving sleep and mood.

What makes CBD so useful is its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our ECS is a vast network of receptor sites throughout the body that communicate with our brain and tell our body what's going on. About every organ system in our body has its own cannabinoid receptors, including the nervous system, immune system and digestive tract—but 80% of all cannabinoid receptors are located in the brain. The cannabinoids found in cannabis plants assist in maintaining homeostasis—the balance between the body's chemical reactions—by activating those cannabinoid receptors.

Research shows that cannabinoids work together with those internal receptors to maintain health and balance. That's why we see so many wellness applications for CBD: they help us get back into balance especially when that balance is disrupted by an illness or ailment or just by regular everyday stressors like bad sleep or unhealthy nutrition. 

CBD can be consumed in many ways: it can be taken as an oil tincture, as an e-liquid for vaporizers, or as an edible such as a CBD-infused chocolate bar or gummies. It can even be used in a topical lotion or balm to combat inflammation and pain.
